Answer engine optimization
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your content the source an AI system reaches for when it writes a direct answer. Not a position in a list of ten links — a named source inside one generated response, on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Claude, Gemini or Copilot.
The shelf used to be ten results long. Now it is three names in a paragraph, and nobody scrolls.
How an answer engine picks sources
Optimising for something you cannot picture is guesswork, and most AEO advice skips straight to tactics. Four things happen between a buyer’s question and the answer they read, and you can lose at any of them.
- 1
The question gets rewritten
A buyer asks something messy and conversational. The system silently expands it into several cleaner search queries — often ones the buyer never typed. You are competing for queries you cannot see in any keyword tool.
- 2
Candidate pages get retrieved
Those queries hit a search index. Only pages that are crawlable, indexed and topically matched make the shortlist. This is the stage most sites lose at, and it is almost entirely technical.
- 3
Pages get read, not ranked
The model pulls text from the shortlist into its context window. Layout, design and interactivity are gone — what survives is the words, in order. Content rendered only in the browser often does not survive at all.
- 4
One answer gets written
The model composes a single response and picks which sources to name. There is no page two. Being the eleventh-best page is identical to being invisible.
Stages one and two are technical and unglamorous, and they are where most sites actually fail. You can check yours in about a minute with the free AI visibility checker — no account needed.
AEO vs SEO vs GEO
AEO and GEO (generative engine optimization) describe the same work in practice, and the industry uses the terms interchangeably. The meaningful contrast is with classical SEO.
| SEO | AEO / GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Competing for | A position in a ranked list | Being named in one written answer |
| Unit that wins | The page | The passage |
| Success looks like | A click | A citation — often with no click |
| Rewards | Depth, links, query match | Extractability, clear entities, consistency |
| Measured by | Rank and traffic | Mention rate, share of voice, sentiment |
| Second chances | Page two exists | There is no page two |
The two are not alternatives. Most answer engines shortlist candidates from a conventional search index before any model reads a word, so SEO is the entry requirement and AEO decides whether you get quoted once you are in the room.
An answer engine optimization checklist
Ordered by what blocks people most often, not by what is most interesting to write about. Work top down.
01Admit the AI crawlers by name
GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and OAI-SearchBot are separate user agents from Googlebot, and plenty of sites block them by accident — through a default robots.txt, a CDN bot rule, or a WAF setting nobody remembers enabling. Check this first, because nothing else matters if it is wrong.
02Server-render the words that matter
If your key content only exists after JavaScript runs, you are relying on every retrieval system to execute it. Many do not, and those that do often truncate. Ship the substance in the HTML.
03Answer in the first hundred words
Models extract the passage that most directly answers the question. A page that spends four paragraphs setting the scene before answering hands the citation to whoever answered immediately. Lead with the answer, then earn the rest of the read.
04Write in extractable units
A self-contained paragraph under a heading that matches the question is the unit answer engines quote. Definitions, comparison tables, numbered steps and short FAQ answers all extract cleanly. Long undifferentiated prose does not.
05Name yourself explicitly, everywhere
Models associate entities with attributes by reading them stated together. "We help teams do X" teaches nothing. "MentionOwl is an AI visibility tool that does X" is a fact a model can carry into an answer about tools like yours.
06Build the comparison pages you are avoiding
A large share of buying prompts are comparative — best, versus, alternatives to. If no page of yours addresses those framings, models assemble the comparison from whoever did, and you appear in it only as described by a competitor.
07Earn mentions on pages models already trust
Answer engines lean disproportionately on a narrow set of sources — Reddit, YouTube, industry roundups, review sites. Being present and accurately described there moves answers even when the model never links to you.
08Measure the answers, not the rankings
Rank tracking cannot see this. The only honest measurement is running the questions your buyers ask across the platforms on a schedule and recording what comes back — who gets named, in what order, described how.

Answer engine optimization FAQ
What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization is the practice of making your content the source an AI system uses when it writes a direct answer. Instead of competing for a position in a list of links, you are competing to be retrieved, read and named inside a single generated response on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Claude, Gemini or Copilot. The work spans technical crawlability, content structure that extracts cleanly, and being described consistently across the web.
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO optimises for a ranked list of links a person chooses from. AEO optimises for a single synthesised answer with no list to choose from. They share a foundation — crawlable, fast, well-structured pages — but diverge on what wins: SEO rewards depth, backlinks and matching a query; AEO rewards passages that answer a question completely in isolation, entities stated plainly enough for a model to carry into a sentence, and consistent descriptions of you across sources you do not control.
Is AEO the same as GEO (generative engine optimization)?
In practice they describe the same work, and most tools and agencies use them interchangeably. Where people draw a distinction: AEO emphasises being the answer to a direct question, including featured snippets and voice results that predate LLMs, while GEO emphasises being cited inside generative output specifically. If a vendor claims a meaningful methodological difference between the two, ask them to name it — the underlying checklist is the same.
Does traditional SEO still matter for AEO?
Yes, more than the framing usually suggests. Most answer engines retrieve candidate pages from a conventional search index before a model reads anything, so a page that cannot rank generally cannot be retrieved either. Treat SEO as the entry requirement and AEO as what determines whether you get quoted once you are in the room.
What are the best answer engine optimization tools?
The category splits in two. Established SEO suites — Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking — have added AI visibility modules to existing platforms, which suits teams already paying for them. Purpose-built AI visibility tools, MentionOwl among them, run your buyers' actual questions across the platforms on a schedule and track who gets named, in what order and with what sentiment. The distinction worth testing before you buy: whether a tool shows you the full answer text and is honest about which platforms return verifiable web-grounded citations versus model responses, since those are very different evidence.
How long does answer engine optimization take to work?
Technical fixes move fastest — unblocking an AI crawler or server-rendering key content can change retrieval within days to weeks, since the underlying indexes refresh continuously. Content and entity work is slower, typically a few months, because it depends on new pages being indexed and on third-party sources being updated and re-crawled. Model answers also vary run to run, so a single check proves very little; the signal is the trend across repeated runs.
How do I measure whether AEO is working?
Track the rate at which you are named across a fixed set of buyer questions, your share of those mentions against named competitors, your position within each answer, and the sentiment of how you are described. Run the same question set on a schedule so the comparison is like for like. Referral traffic from AI platforms is worth watching but badly undercounts the effect — most answers resolve the question without a click.
